Compare a bundle discount against entered reference prices, measure variable-cost contribution and test a target contribution margin. Estimate period operating profit separately from per-bundle contribution.

Sum current comparable net component prices × each component quantity. This is your reference assumption, not a verified sale-price history.

Sum assigned product/landed costs × the actual quantities in one complete bundle. Not an average item cost.

All variable bundle assembly, delivery, handling and other selling expenses not already included; account consistently for recoverable returns.

An allocated fixed charge for the represented sale. Avoid duplicating per-order charges when several bundles share an order.

Your fee assumption on net product price only, below 100%. Taxes, shipping collected, tiered caps and individually rounded fees are outside this simple model.

One aggregate bundle discount from 0 to 100%. Do not enter component prices already reduced by this same bundle discount.

After entered variable costs/fees, before period fixed costs. Fee rate plus target margin must remain below 100%.

Round the target contribution-margin price upward on a positive grid with at most four decimal places.

Your total allocation for the same planning period; not a per-bundle cost. Avoid including amounts already treated as variable.

Whole net complete bundles in that period; 0 is valid. This is a scenario, not a demand or inventory-availability forecast.

Formula

Scenario bundle price = reference-price sum × (1 − discount fraction). Base variable cost B = component product costs + variable fulfillment + allocated fixed transaction charge. Contribution per bundle = bundle price × (1 − fee fraction) − B. Contribution margin = contribution ÷ positive bundle price × 100. Target-margin price = B ÷ (1 − fee fraction − target margin fraction), rounded up to the chosen increment. Maximum target-compatible discount = (reference sum − rounded target price) ÷ positive reference sum × 100, only when a positive target price does not exceed the reference. Whole-bundle operating break-even = ceiling(period fixed costs ÷ positive contribution); period operating profit = contribution × volume − fixed costs.

How to use this calculation

A reference sum of 80 with one 20% discount gives a bundle price of 64 and a reference reduction of 16. Component costs 30, fulfillment 5, fixed fee 0.30 and a 2.9% proportional fee give 37.156 variable costs and 26.844 contribution per bundle, a 41.94375% contribution margin. A 30% contribution target gives a 52.61 upward-rounded price, corresponding to a 34.2375% maximum discount from this reference sum. With 1,000 period fixed costs, 38 complete bundles cover those costs; 100 bundles imply 1,684.40 operating profit before excluded expenses.

  • Enter totals for one complete fixed bundle at its actual component quantities and a consistent currency/product mix. The discount applies once to the aggregate reference sum; component-level discount/tax allocation is platform-specific and not produced here. Reference prices must be comparable and defensible before making a consumer savings claim. A 100% discount is a valid free/loss scenario, not a positive-margin offer.
  • Contribution deducts entered variable product, fulfillment and selling fees but not period fixed operating costs; it differs from gross margin and net profit. The target price uses the same fee basis, while fixed costs are assessed separately using volume. A target price above the reference cannot be achieved with a nonnegative discount. A zero reference or zero monetary target floor does not justify inventing a percentage margin at a zero selling price.
  • The model assumes unchanged component costs, fee basis and bundle mix across volume. Positive contribution supports a whole-bundle break-even threshold; nonpositive contribution cannot cover positive fixed costs. With zero fixed costs, zero sales can meet zero operating profit even if positive-volume sales would lose money. Projected profit excludes financing, income tax and unentered costs. Changing sales mix, returns, cannibalization, capacity or quantity discounts can change outcomes; this does not measure incremental campaign ROI, update a store or guarantee achievable demand.
